How to Make Edible Fairies

How to Make Edible Fairiesthumbnail Carve a sheet cake into the shape of a fairy for a sweet, fluttery treat. Fairies are sweet and delicate, so to make edible fairies, try making a dessert since it reflects these qualities. One way to make edible fairies is to make a sheet cake carved into the shape of a fairy. This cake would be a perfect for a fairy or mystical-creatures themed party. With a little bit of time and patience and a steady hand, you'll be able to make a beautiful fairy cake that will impress everyone who eats a slice.

Place one of the sheet cakes in front of you. Ice the top of it with an icing spatula, but do not ice the sides. Stack the other cake directly on top of the first cake.

2

Use a kitchen knife to carve the stacked sheet cake into the shape of a fairy. Use an image of a fairy to guide you, if you like. The most important part are the wings. Otherwise, just make the fairy look light and delicate. Fairies are generally small with larger wings, dainty faces and ethereal, sometimes tattered, clothing.

3

Ice the entire cake in a thin layer of white icing. Place the cake in the refrigerator for about an hour. Pull the cake back out and put another layer of white icing on it. This second layer will make it so that there are no visible crumbs, and the icing will go on more smoothly than it did for the first coat of icing.

4

Put large dollops of white icing into small bowls. Dye each bowl of icing a different color, creating all the colors that you want to use for your fairies. Mix the dye into the icing with a spoon. Make black icing as well. If you do not have black food dye, add equal parts red, blue and yellow until the icing turns black. This will take some time, but it will ultimately become black.

5

Snip the tip of an icing bag. Push a very small round icing tip into the bottom of the bag. Put black icing into the icing bag. Slide the icing down into the bottom of the bag, releasing any trapped air bubbles, and twist the top of the bag to keep the icing down at the bottom.

6

Pipe the black icing along the outer edges of the cake. Use the black icing to also pipe the outline of the fairy's face, features, clothing and any other defining characteristics. This will sort of be like creating your own coloring book page or template, which you will then fill in with different colors of icing.

7

Put other icing colors in icing bags as in Step 3. Fill in the outline of the fairy you created on the fairy cake with whichever colors you choose. Add some edible glitter to the fairy's wings, if you like.

8

Store the cake in the refrigerator until a few hours before it is ready to be served. This will allow the icing to set.

Decorating cakes takes time, patience and a certain level of skill. Don't get too frustrated if it doesn't immediately look perfect -- especially during the earlier stages of the process. Give yourself time to fix any mistakes you make along the way and try not to get frustrated, and you'll find that the end result is very successful.

Use caution when carving the sheet cake with a kitchen knife.
